Chapter 12

Nathan woke up on the couch the next morning, his mind going straight to Chloe and the fun they’d had with chess the night before. It had been a long time since he’d played, and it showed in his performance. Chloe was indeed good. He might have done a little better, though, if she wasn’t so distracting. The way she twisted her lip while she was considering her next move, the way her silky hair fell around her shoulders, the sparkle in her eye when she knew she was winning…he didn’t have much of a real chance.

Jon and Alexis soon came up behind him. Alexis was fully dressed and her hair neatly brushed. Jon looked like Alexis had just rolled him out of bed. His faded T-shirt had a hole in one side, and his sweatpants bore more than one large stain. He raked a hand through his pillow head hair and yawned.

“Morning, cuz.” Jon made his way to the kitchen.

“Forgive my husband,” Alexis said with a sigh. “He dresses like a caveman.”

“Actually, he’s well dressed for a caveman.” Nathan pushed his blanket aside and sat up.

A laugh came from the hallway, and Chloe popped in the doorway.

“Maybe if we’re snowed in long enough you could go hunting.” She wore one of Alexis’s sweaters with black leggings. Her hair was twisted up in a messy bun.

“What are we hunting for?”

“Bears? What do you make caveman clothes out of?”

Nathan enjoyed the humor in her eyes. “I suppose a bear would work…”

“I don’t care how desperate things become,” Alexis said, crossing her arms. “We’re not hunting any of Mother Nature’s precious creatures.”

“You’ve been feeding me plenty of creatures since I’ve been here,” Nathan chortled.

“I didn’t hunt any of them.” Alexis spun around and walked toward the kitchen. “I’m going to see what we have for breakfast this morning.”

“We’re joking, Lex,” Chloe called out, then sat down on the couch with Nathan. “No part of me is into hunting.”

“Yeah, me neither.” Nathan didn’t want to read too much into it, and there was a throw pillow between them, but she’d chosen to sit near him. “I do like watching the Discovery Channel though.”

Chloe grabbed the remote control from a side table and switched it on. “Maybe we can find something interesting before we need to go back outside.”

“I think we’ll finish the driveway this morning. Then we need the city to come and clear the roads.”

Chloe turned to the right channel, then cringed when the screen showed them an arctic fox walking through a snowstorm.

“This is bad timing to watch this, isn’t it?”

“Yeah, let’s find something about a tropical island.” Chloe browsed through the channels. They landed on a show about Mars.

It sucked them both in quickly. Van wandered by, and kept walking to the kitchen. Martin and Hazel came in next and stood behind the couch for a few minutes, frowning at the TV.

“You’re welcome to join us,” Nathan offered.

Hazel laid one hand on Nathan’s shoulder, and her other hand on Chloe’s, giving them each a soft squeeze.
